Earth tones have a reputation for being safe. We find them anything but. Terracotta, chocolate brown, olive and warm sand are rich colours with real presence, and they flatter nearly everyone.

Build from one family
The easiest way to wear earth tones is to stay within one family of colours. A cream top with a sand-coloured skirt, or chocolate with a touch of warm copper, looks effortless because the colours already belong together.
Add one unexpected accent
A pop of pink, a band of green or a scalloped trim in a contrasting shade keeps a neutral palette from feeling flat. The accent does not need to be large. It needs to be intentional.

Let the setting do some work
Earth tones come alive against terracotta walls, green plants and warm light. They are the colours of the places we love, and the clothes seem to belong to them.
The most confident colours are often the ones that do not shout.
Start with a single earth-toned piece this week and see how often it becomes the first thing you reach for.
